Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career in fashion so far?

Hi, my names Michael (@them1show) and I’m a content creator within the fashion and footwear space. I initially started reviewing trainers on YouTube during the pandemic, a time when I think everyone discovered they had an element of creativity, and that was where my journey as a creative began. During my time collecting trainers I realised that I didn’t just want to wear trainers but I wanted to do them justice via my outfits as well.

Essentially I wanted to wear my outfits and I didn’t want my outfits to wear me.”

So I began looking at brands across the board for example streetwear brands like Corteiz, Stussy and Carhartt, as well as investing in my friend’s brands who are producing great quality clothing like Soho Yacht Club, Arif Ferdous and Rehoboth. I think supporting your friends in fashion is important and I think that’s a very central part of my style because I believe in what my friends produce and I want everyone else to believe in them too, rather than just sticking with this typical big name high street brands, because there’s enough space for everyone to flourish.

I also like to discuss fashion and trainers with my friends on our podcast called ‘TheStockroom’ (@thestockroompod on instagram) which was an idea that came from our shared background working in retail. We realised there was a lack of conversation in the UK when it came to footwear so instead of waiting for someone else to do it, we started our own! It’s been a great journey and we’ve had the privilege of being able to have conversations with a lot of guests, each with their own individual stories, while also discussing some of the most important topics in fashion.

Mike wears the Birkenstock Boston’ Clogs in Taupe with a knit sweater and chinos. Seasonal styling masterclass!

Describe your personal style?

I would say my dress sense is a blend between streetwear and smart casual. I guess you could call it street/casual? I could wake up and decide I want to wear a knitwear piece with jeans and #DrMartens ‘Adrian Loafers’ or I might want to wear an oversized hoodie with cargos and a pair of New Balance 993’s.

I usually go for a slightly oversized fit, with straight-leg bottoms whether that be jeans, cargos or joggers, just because I prefer how they sit on my footwear.

I like wearing colours and even if i’m wearing black there will be a colour within my fit that will pop or have people wondering ‘how did he put that together?’, and it’s a nice feeling being able to leave that sort of effect on people.

What are three products essential to your wardrobe?

Knitwear sweaters, they’re a really simple piece to style and it just adds to the textures within your outfit even if the design isn’t so complex it still takes your fit up by a level or two.

Denim workwear jeans, just fit my style perfectly and the way they sit on trainers makes them a staple in my wardrobe. Having different colours is perfect too because it allows me to explore different combinations and overall I think it’s always good to have a range of tones, especially across staple pieces. My third and final essential would be hats. Fitted hats and trucker hats are great to finish off an outfit, especially on days when I don’t have a trim. I also think it is just a great accessory to complement an outfit and just balance out the tones throughout a good fit.

Mike has styled the Birkenstock ‘Arizona’ in Taupe Suede with a knit sweater vest layered over a cotton crew neck and straight leg jeans.

What comes first, the footwear or the fit?

Tough question but I’d have to say the fit comes first purely because I live in the UK. You never really know what the weather has in store so if I know its going to rain there are certain pieces that I can’t wear out, and that will then based on the fit I’d then select the shoes to go with it, which has actually got a lot harder to do as my range of footwear has grown.

How are you styling your summer essentials (sandals etc) this season?

The sun personally inspires some really great outfits for me, so for example on holiday I might wear a pair of black #OFFICE ‘Sandals’ with sail plisse trousers and a matching sail plisse shirt. Or I would wear a forest green knitwear sweater or cardigan, blue denim workwear jeans and #DrMartens ‘Carlson Suede Mules’ in black with a forest green #SohoYachtClub hat to finish it off.

What three shoes are in your shopping basket rn?

I’d have to say the #DrMarten ‘Carlson Mules’, a pair of those will definitely be seeing me soon, they’re really comfy but still have a sophisticated look to them. I’m also due another knitwear piece so I’m actively on the lookout for something that fits my specs, preferably featuring some form of cobalt blue and finally a navy denim jacket, Levi’s trucker jacket has been on my radar for a while, so I may make my purchase very soon.

Mike has paired the Crocs ‘Clog’ with a Carhartt sweatshirt and chino shorts. 10/10 comfy n cool tonal vibez.
