Something for the weekend: Oxjam Brixton Takeover

Friday, October 18th, 2013

We know, it’s cold and miserable and pay day is a couple of weeks away, but if you were thinking of staying in this weekend, think again. Some of our favourite stomping grounds in Brixton are being taken over on Saturday as Oxjam Brixton returns, celebrating local musical talent, raising cash for a good cause and generally providing a great excuse to go out and have a good time.

The Prince of Wales, Upstairs@ The Ritzy, The Windmill, Kaff Bar, Effra Social, The Whitehorse are all taking part and will be hosting some of London’s coolest DJs and musicians including Drum N Bass legends DJ Bailey, and Bryan G, Cooly G, Vis-à –Vis and Misty Miller.

If you’re still not convinced, here’s five reasons you should be heading to Brixton this Saturday…

1 – It only costs £10.  For the price of a takeaway pizza at home you can get access to all six venues – day and night – and over 40 acts. That’s right £10.

2 – You might see some celebs. Loads of famous faces are supporters of Oxjam including Jarvis Cocker, Fatboy Slim, Damon Albarn and Hot Chip so there’s a chance you might bump into them and bond over your mutual support of the charity.

3 – It’s for a good cause. If you get terrible night out guilt when you see the collection of receipts in your bag/pocket the next morning, you can comfort yourself with the fact you were supporting a good cause.

4 – Support local talent. If you stay in, the most musical talent you’ll see is the X Factor hopefuls murdering classic love songs. If you go to Oxjam you’ll get the chance to see some real, home-grown musical talent who haven’t been pushed together by Louis Walsh and co.

5 – The Brixton Takeover is renowned for being the biggest and the best of all the Oxjam events, and this year there are even more venues and acts taking part.
