Wedding Dresses 1775-2014 Exhibition at the V&A

Friday, May 16th, 2014

With the start of wedding season kicking off, we are starting to try on hats, pick out our outfits and find the best shoes for the occasion.

Here at Office HQ we are firm fans of anything that lets us combine culture and fashion so over the weekend we decided to head to the V&A’s Wedding Dresses 1775-2014 exhibition.

The exhibition combines some of the most glamorous and best known wedding dresses of recent years, including the purple Vivienne Westwood gown Dita Von Teese wore when she married Marilyn Manson, the shimmering John Galliano number Kate Moss wore when she tied the knot and Gwen Stefani’s dip-dyed pink and white wedding dress.

There were also a number of fabulously frothy creations from top designers including Charles Frederick Worth, Norman Hartnell, Charles James, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix and Vera Wang, showing how wedding trends have altered over the years.

The 80 dresses on display are all remarkably different, ranging from the sleek sophisticated coat dress worn when the Duchess of Cornwall married the Prince of Wales to Ian Stuart’s Flower Bomb dress with its ruffled skirt and statement train.

There are also accessories galore, including a hat worn by Selina Blow on her wedding day, which resembles the roofs of Sri Lankan buildings.

But the exhibition isn’t just about window shopping for wedding dresses (although we did pick up a few ideas for when it’s our turn to walk down the aisle…).

Curator of textiles and fashion at the V&A, Edwina Ehrman set out to explore the history of the traditional white wedding dress and highlight periods when other colours proved more popular among brides-to-be.

The exhibition also reflects multi-cultural London and features traditional wedding outfits from other countries, including stunning saris from India and simple cotton dresses from Ghana.

Wedding Dresses 1775-2014 will be on display at the V&A until March next year, so you’ve got plenty of time to visit, whether you’re looking for wedding dress inspiration for your own big day, or just want to learn a bit about fashion history.

It’s recommended that you book in advance, tickets cost £13.50 including a donation.
