Best Dressed at the Met Ball

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

Fashion’s elite turned out last night for the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala.

This year’s theme, Beyond Fashion, saw attendees showcasing their best designer ball gowns and tuxedos and the overall display had a touch of elegance and classic Hollywood glamour.

Some of the stars, including Rihanna and Cara Delevingne, managed to add a bit of edge to their ensembles,  modelling crop tops showing flashes of their tattoos while others opted for thigh-high skirt splits or mini dresses rather than floor-skimming gowns.

We take a look at some of the best-dressed stars from the night.

Cara Delevingne

Her outfit may have been a simple monochrome affair but that didn’t stop model of the moment Cara Delevingne standing out from the crowd. Rather than wearing a ball gown, she opted for fitted white cigarette trousers and a strappy cutaway top with a plunging neckline, designed by Stella McCartney. Her blonde locks were swept to one side and she accessorised with eye-catching diamond earrings, bracelets and rings.

Blake Lively

Actress Blake Lively stole the show in a mermaid style slinky metallic gown which oozed Hollywood starlet, echoing 40′s goddess Veronica Lake. The cape-style train and cinched-in waist added a vintage twist to the ensemble. With her hair styled in soft waves and a slick of red lipstick, Blake looked every inch the screen siren.

Sarah Jessica Parker

We can always rely on SJP to go all out at the Met Ball and this year was no exception. The dramatic black and white Oscar de la Renta gown looked like something her on-screen alter ego Carrie Bradshaw would have worn. Elbow-length white gloves and a dramatic hairstyle added to the over-the-top look and we can only imagine what shoes she was wearing under that full skirt!

Benedict Cumberbatch

While many male attendees weren’t quite brave enough for white tie, opting for traditional tuxedos instead of tails, Benedict Cumberbatch went all out in a Ralph Lauren black tux tailcoat. Every inch the dashing English gent.
