School Daze

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

With September around the corner and summer holidays coming to an end, it is the perfect excuse to get new shoes, accessories and stationary treats to show off at school.

We have taken some inspiration from classic TV shows and movies of the ’80s and ’90s that made school look like the coolest place to be.

Classics such as Saved by the Bell, Sweet Valley High and Clueless still manage to inspire fashion, with girls loving chunky t-bar flats, quilted ballerinas and the guys channelling their inner Zack Morris with varsity jackets and Nike Air Huarache’s.

Tomboys will love some Kickers brogues or Kennedy Lace Ups and can girl it up with some frilly or knee high socks and pleated skirt.

Showcase some Cher Horowitz style with a classic ballerina flat like the Karmen, or add a bit of height with the Gossip, both are sure to make you the most popular girl in school.

Bookworms will often be found in the library sporting some retro loafers like the Extravaganza and Volt Chain Slipper, but don’t underestimate the style of the ‘nerds’ as geek is most definitely chic.

The return of the 90s

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

It has finally happened. A trend which we can remember from the first time around is back en vogue. Yes that’s right, the 90s are back in fashion.

The spring/summer 14 catwalks so far have featured a number of outfits which are like so totally Cher from Clueless, with Sister by Sibling and Moschino both sending models down the runway in co-ordinating skirt suits and crop tops. Elsewhere statement checks, A-line skirts and rucksacks have been a common sight in both high end and high street collections, making us regret having that wardrobe purge before we left home.

And it’s not just Cher whose look is back in fashion. Double denim, as rocked by those rather dubious fashion icons B*Witched, is one of the coolest off-duty styles around, with the likes of Rihanna and Miranda Kerr pairing dark skinnies with paler denim shirts for a relaxed look, while dungarees and scrunchies are also working their way back into the mainstream.

Another 90s trend we’ll definitely be embracing is the slip dress, as seen on the likes of Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow. Missguided and Topshop both have a wide range of slips which you can dress up with heels for a night out or layer over a white t-shirt for a more casual look.

If you’re in need of some fashion inspiration, we recommend you sit back and watch a few of the following. These shows’ female stars definitely had 90s dressing down to a fine art…

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer – we lusted after Sarah Michelle Gellar’s crop tops, mini backpacks and butterfly clips then and now we’re hankering after them again…
  • Clarissa Explains It All – no-one rocked prints like Melissa Joan Hart.
  • Saved by the Bell – what teenage girl didn’t want to be Kelly Kapowski? Her high-waisted shirts and crop top combos will be our uniform this summer and we’re trying to perfect the top knot she pulled off so effortlessly.
