The rise of the Christmas jumper

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

This year Christmas jumpers are no longer the preserve of young children and embarrassing uncles, they’re the perfect way to make a festive fashion statement.

Novelty jumpers are lining the shelves of pretty much every high street store and even the likes of Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs and Markus Lupfer have put their own spin on Christmas couture.

A number of designers have also created bespoke festive fashions in aid of Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day, which this year falls on December 13 and will see people all over the UK pulling on their Christmas jumpers and donating £1 or more to the charity.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of stylish novelty knit loving celebs like Taylor Swift, Fearne Cotton, Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry, who have all been spotted in Christmas jumpers in the past, you’ll have unprecedented choice this year.

Data from trend agency WGSN shows that a massive 136 novelty jumpers have been launched by UK retailers in the past month alone, ranging from classic Fair Isle prints to ironic designs and slogan sweaters.

Our favourites include a cheeky Primark offering featuring some strategically placed Christmas puds. At just £12, it doesn’t matter that this jumper has a limited shelf life. We love a bit of Christmas kitsch here in HO and held a Christmas jumper competition last year. With so many more on offer this year we think we might have a rematch!

Or for something a bit more subtle, Topshop’s fluffy knitted snowflake jumper taps into the trend for texture while Cath Kidston’s Santa knit is charmingly traditional.

If you just want to make a subtle nod to the fashion for festive jumpers, you’ll be able to keep cosy in Topshop’s Fair Isle knits past Boxing Day.

To stop your fluffy Christmas knits being too kitsch, team them with contrasting leather trousers or inky blue jeans.
