Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

It’s been a week of runway shows, celeb spotting and chic street style. The Paris Haute Couture Fall-Winter collection thrilled fashion lovers with its mix of outrageous and classic styles. The designers were all out in force with glamorous designs that will be finding their way into the high street this autumn.

Chanel does neoprene

Chanel’s designer Karl Lagerfield experimented with neoprene -and featured a pregnant model wearing a Baroque-inspired wedding gown made out of the wetsuit material. He also featured neoprene ballroom gowns teamed with flat sandals that wrapped around the models’ ankles.

Spaced out

Inspired  by both astronauts and 18th-century styles, designer Raf Simons Dior’s collection featured full-skirted gowns with T-back tops and long coats and detailed flapper dressers with resin fringing.

Ladylike

The Giorgio Armani collection showed off softly tailored suits – so smart that even the shorts wouldn’t look out of place in the office. His models also looked beautifully feminine in paillette-covered tulle gowns.

Celeb spotting

The stars were out to play in Paris, from Kim Kardashian to Kristen Stewart, every fashionista came out to see what’s hot on the catwalk.

The Kardashian’s sister Kendall Jenner worked the catwalk for Chanel, and also looked hot off the runway. Arriving at the Balmain show with a Roman inspired embossed leather dress featuring pleated flaps, Kendall finished the look with black ankle stiletto boots.

Jennifer Lawrence looked stunning in a sophisticated gown at Dior’s exclusive after-show dinner. Jennifer wore a figure-hugging Dior Bouclé dress with metallic embroidery, paired with silver Dior pumps.

Meanwhile, Emma Watson looked classy in a shaped black trouser suit with nipped in waist and open-toed sandals.

And Kristen Stewart showed off her new short hairstyle, with edgy dyed-red tips. She rocked her new edgy look with a tight white crop top and high- waisted crocheted white trousers – teamed with white Christian Louboutin heels.

But the surprise of the week had to go to Hollywood A-listers Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, who walked into the Christian Dior show holding hands and sat on the front row together. Charlize, who is a brand ambassador for Dior, shone in a gold-fringed cocktail dress and high-heeled strappy nude sandals, while her new man looked cool in a black Dior suit and open-necked white shirt.

Red carpet round-up

Friday, January 10th, 2014

We may only be a couple of weeks into the new year, but a host of celebs have already shown off some stunning gowns on the red carpet.

We take a closer look at some of our favourites.

Margot Robbie

Wolf Of Wall Street star Margot Robbie opted for a modest red silk dress at the film’s London première this week. The scarlet two-tone number by Oscar de la Renta featured a high neckline and long sleeves, but a knee-high slit at the front and the nipped-in waist kept it on the right side of frumpy. We also loved her gold stilettos.

Naya Rivera

Naya Rivera modelled an elegantly simple gown at the 40th Annual People’s Choice Awards in LA. The beige, white and black Michael Kors dress combined a number of trends including body-con, colour blocking and a dipped hem. The look was completed with a stylish gold necklace, some strappy Stuart Weitzman shoes and new honey-coloured locks.

Paloma Faith

Paloma Faith was all about vintage inspired pastels at the Burberry Prorsum Menswear show in London. Her lace Burberry shirt dress was in one of this season’s hottest colours; pink, while her mint green coat and metallic accessories complemented it perfectly.

Paloma also rocked a new hair-do, ditching her trademark red locks in favour of a cool blonde look.

Allison Williams

Girls star Allison Williams has expressed an interest in following in Jennifer Aniston’s footsteps as America’s sweetheart and we think she is well on her way after wowing in a series of gorgeous dresses recently.

One of our favourites is this white satin cocktail dress with crystal and sequin embellishment which she wore for the Girls series three launch. The soft pleat skirt and classic boat neck were timelessly elegant but the stunning detailing ensured it was right on trend.

Trends we won’t miss in 2014

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

2013 was a great year for fashion, but as always, there was room for a few errors. We take a look at some of the faux pas we hope won’t be returning in 2014.

Mum jeans

There’s room in our wardrobes for skinny jeans, bootleg, boyfriend, cropped and even jeggings, but we draw the line at mum jeans. With their high waist, tapered legs and baggy thighs, was there ever a more unflattering way to wear denim?

Too much flesh

We are all for flashing a bit of toned tummy in a crop top, or for some artfully placed sheer panelling in a LBD, but 2013 saw some people daring to bare far too much. Bikini tops and hot pants are for the beach, not the red carpet. We’re looking at you Miley Cyrus.

OTT flatforms

Now we love a statement shoe, but some of the crazy flatforms being sold were too much even for us. Plus they are actually really hard to walk in, give us some four inch heels or flat pumps any day.

Mullet skirts

Much like the hair-do they take their name from, mullet skirts with a short front and a trailing back have had their day. In 2014, pick either mini, midi or maxi and stick with it.

All over matching prints

Head to toe matching prints is always too much, instead, break up your outfit with some neutrals, or opt for a mixture of clashing prints in complementary colours.

Overalls

Jumpsuits and playsuits can look very stylish, onesies are fine in the privacy of your own home, but there’s no place in our wardrobes for overalls, unless you are doing some DIY.

2013’s Best Dressed Women

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

As 2013 came to an end, a number of fashion mags revealed which stars they thought had topped the style stakes over the past 12 months.

We take a look at some of the worthy winners.

Marion Cotillard

French actress Marion Cotillard always looks impeccable on the red carpet and her highly glamorous ensembles saw her being named best dressed woman of 2013 by Grazia. As the face of Dior she has her pick of couture and the canary yellow gown she wore to the Baftas in February certainly got the year off to a stylish start. Other favourite pieces include the striking white structured gown she wore in Cannes and the striped midi dress she wore in Marrakech in November.

Miranda Kerr

Vogue has named a whole host of women in its best dressed list, and one fashionista we think definitely deserves her place in the pack is model Miranda Kerr. The mum of one looks effortlessly stylish whether she’s rocking boho style Gucci dresses, Balmain printed trousers or a pair of ripped jeans and a white t-shirt at a basketball game.

Rihanna

Rihanna was another stylish lady singled out for praise by Vogue. Her outfit choices are always bold, normally featuring neon colours, eye-catching prints, plunging necklines or a combination of all three, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The custom Azzedine Alaïa red gown she wore for the Grammys showed she can combine sexy with ladylike.

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart’s off duty wardrobe of scruffy jeans, hoodies and Converse may not be the most stylish, but she always pulls it out of the bag for red carpet events, which is why she was Glamour’s best dressed woman of 2013. From cute shorts and top combos by Osman to lace jumpsuits by Zuhair Murad, Stewart’s fashion choices always have edge.

Nicole Richie

Female First’s choice for best dressed was Nicole Richie, who has truly established her sense of style in recent years having moved on from boho chic to slick tailoring and slinky red carpet dresses. The plunging Roberto Cavalli gown she wore to the Elton John AIDS Foundation party was a perfect example of her new look.

Red carpet roundup

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Which celebs’ outfits have you been drooling over this week? We take a closer look at some of the ensembles which have wowed on the red carpet.

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes’ wardrobe choices are normally sophisticated and elegant, so it was nice to see her embracing her youthful side at the Z100 Jingle Bell Ball on Friday. The actress modelled a flirty short skirt, teamed with one of this season’s style staples, a statement sweater with stud detailing. She finished off the look with some black heels and a slick of festive red lipstick.

Jessica Ennis-Hill

We’re more used to seeing her in sports gear, but Jessica Ennis-Hill showed she knows how to turn on the glam at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards on Sunday. Her figure-hugging Victoria Beckham cobalt blue pencil dress showed off her athletic frame, while simple black accessories let the bright dress do the talking.

Katy Perry

Sumptuous brocade is one of the hottest materials this season and Katy Perry wore it to great effect at the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes on Saturday. The cream and gold mullet-style dress, with long, floaty sleeves should have been tricky to pull off, however, with the help of some dramatic chandelier style earrings and some gold sparkly Louboutins, Katy pulled it off in style.

Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate looked like a true screen siren at the UK premiere of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, in a stunning pale pink Emilio Pucci lace gown. She completed the glamorous look by sweeping her hair into a loose up do.

Be tickled pink by pastel coats

Monday, October 28th, 2013

The fashion rulebook has been thrown out. Rather than the dark shades which normally dominate our wardrobes at this time of year, pastels are reigning supreme as the hottest colours for Autumn/Winter 13. The most fashion forward among us are thinking pink, in particular the pink coats seen at the likes of Celine and Carven, which are one of the must-have items of the season.

Everyone from Kim Kardashian to Holly Willoughby has been spotted looking great in a candy floss coloured coat. Here’s our top tips for working one into your winter wardrobe.

Choose the right shade

First you need to choose the right shade of pink to compliment your skin tone. People with dark hair and olive skin can get away with sugary pale shades, but those with blonde hair or paler skin may want to go for a slightly darker rosy hue. Experiment with a few different shades before buying, the perfect pink for you is out there somewhere!

Go monochrome

Teaming your pink coat with a sophisticated monochrome ensemble will ensure you scream ‘preened’ rather than ‘pre-teen’. Plus the pink will really pop against the black and white.

Toughen it up

Pink doesn’t have to mean princess. Why not try adding some edge to your pastel coat. Toughen it up with leather and metal detailing and accessories. Skin-tight leather leggings or a pair of buckle detail boots like this Boy Front Zip pair will do the job perfectly.

Go for a mannish shape

Over-sized masculine-inspired coats are another hot trend this Autumn/Winter and the two work perfectly together. A feminine pink shade softens structured shoulders and boxy shapes while an androgynous style brings a pink coat to just the right side of girly.

What women want (men not to wear)

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

If you are trying to dress to impress the opposite sex then a recent survey may have some interesting insights for you. The poll, by TLC TV, highlighted the fashion fads that women don’t find attractive on men. Top of the list were low hanging jeans, baseball caps balanced on the back of the head and ankle skimming trousers. It seems women also find it a turn-off when men wear pink jeans, short shorts, low v-neck t-shirts, onesies and ‘girly’ scarves. So boys if there are any three-quarter length trousers or white vests lurking in your wardrobe, it also might be worth throwing them out. In terms of footwear, heeled shoes are a no-no as is rocking socks and sandals.

If you want to make a good impression, a beautifully cut suit is the way to a woman’s heart, according to stylist Brix Smith-Start, who suggested men look to Jude Law and front row favourite Harry Styles for fashion inspiration. The women questioned also highlighted George Clooney and David Beckham as men they’d like their boyfriends to dress like.

And if you are thinking about ignoring this advice, you may want to think again. The survey found that women are far more likely to judge the opposite sex by the clothes they wear. Women are also less likely to accept a date if the suitor is badly dressed – only 47% would accept a date with someone who has bad fashion sense.

We think you can’t go wrong with a well-fitting pair of jeans, teamed with some stylish trainers or on-trend hiking boots and topped off with a baseball jacket as seen at Missoni and Oliver Spencer this Autumn/Winter. For more formal occasions, a slimline charcoal suit as seen at Bottega Veneta is the perfect choice.

Festival Culture – Our Forecast

Monday, May 13th, 2013

One of the most famous festivals to take place was the Woodstock festival of 1969. Also known as ‘Three days of peace and music’ the 2 day concert was initially planned as a ‘one off’ so four young chaps could invest their money to build a recording studio.

After finding a large, unused area that would home 50,000 revellers, the event attracted 500,000. Sex, drugs and rock and roll, the prolonged event caused uproar but huge media attention and has given the World festival culture.

The Black Boot

With the military and boyfriend trends still dominating the cat walks and a favourite for celebrities, the black boot is on our festival hit list.

We love the versatility of this staple, looking great with vibrant prints, teamed simply with a pretty, pastel dress or even layered with denim cut offs and a jumper as Diana Vickers sports.

OFFICE PICKS

Feelin’ Free

When the mud is nowhere to be seen, give your feet the freedom they deserve with sandals and flats. Cut out detailing and bold buckles are key this season so opt for a neutral colour like Heidi Range, and let your clothes do the talking. Works great with floral prints!

The Classic Essential

When we mention festivals we usually think of mud and that means ‘wellies’. Even super models like Kate Moss make staying in the mud chic. But don’t wait for the rain, as we’ve seen on the catwalk, festival styling this year means wellies are in. They’re perfect for light layering and great with shorts.

Plus, if the mud takes over, why not make a ‘Welly Henge’ like they do at Glastonbury with all of the abandoned wellies.

Millie Mackintosh Wears Office

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Summer is approaching and that means it’s time to revamp the wardrobe. The ever-glam Millie shows us how in three perfectly styled ensembles. The Made in Chelsea beauty polishes each look off with a pair of OFFICE heels, proving there’s only one shoe destination this season! Our summer collection has started to arrive so make sure to take a sneak peek soon.

Millie wears the Oxygen mid heel with a monochrome-chic outfit and black accessories, also available in white.

Pretty and simple, Millie wears a polka dot dress and adds statement tan leather heels with On the Sea. The wooden sole and heel are right on trend this season too.

Millie shows how the neutral trend is done with beige shorts and jacket, teamed with the Olive heel. We love how she’s broken the look up with a tucked in floral blouse.
