| Well it’s high time we had a bit of a catch up on how our Summer Holiday Competition winner got on in Miami. So here goes, sit tight and allow the wonderfully charismatic Camille to transport you to a sunnier climate with her candid tales; |
| “Surfing. Fantastically good fun, in the sea as on the net. Both ways, if you let yourself go completely, ride the wave with absolute freedom, you never know where you might end up. Tossed and buffeted every which way but loose… I love it, you never know where you might end up. Well, in my case, the wave took me to Miami. Woosh…There I am, my fingers expertly weaving me round the web, and next thing I know I am the winner of the most fabulous summer competition courtesy of Office, Look Magazine and Virgin Holidays. |
| Now I may as well tell you know, when it comes to travelling I am usually cursed. What am I saying, I AM cursed. This is no laughing matter. Family members generally refuse to travel on the same day/plane/train as me for fear of what may lie ahead. You name it, I’ve been through it. Unable to travel home for Christmas (Eurostar blocked in tunnel), stranded in JFK over new year’s eve (blizzard), stuck in Seville two days prior to finals (Volcano ashes – remember Eyjafjallajokull?)… Not this time though. I guess the cherry on the cake of this gorgeous prize was that there was not a single hitch. Not one (unless you count my being distraught at not having Will Smith as a welcome committee, melodiously rapping WELCOME TO MIAMI as I stepped off the plane). And when our driver dropped us off at the Mondrian, the coolest urban chic hotel I have ever had the pleasure of staying at, I knew the boy and I would be having the time of our lives! |
| The hotel was in fact so cool that we were tempted to spend all six days lounging by the pool, sipping cocktails and soaking up the (very hot) sun. Set in a stunning all black and white minimalistic décor, and located in South Beach, the Mondrian fulfilled all the clichés of what life in Miami is all about: flashy, fun and fabulous. Highlight of the week? The in-house all-day pool party complete with thumping house beats and magic mojitos. |
| I could go on about the hotel and it’s daylight nightlife, but let’s move on to the main event: food. When in Rome etc.. Why bother even making the 8 hour trip if one does not plan to indulge in a giant burger or two. Not to mention oversized pancakes with maple syrup, frothy milkshakes, waffles and whipped cream, french fries and nachos. Although I’m very much a ‘full English’ kinda girl, South Beach’s 11th Street Diner’s authentic fare floored me (in a good way) and set me out to sashay out into the city in my new biker boots. And while I was embracing all things US of A, I also dug out the hot-pants. Potentially the shortest piece of sartorialism I own, and perfect for the job at hand. Giving off a casual-meets-urban cool Florida vibe that is, not eating as much as possible. Being open 24/7 meant that we did make regular pit stops to the Art Déco dining car; we did not however confine our culinary exploration to all-American fast-food. Indeed, another great find was Sushi Samba, a restaurant offering a unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine and design. If you ever get a chance, you could also check out the News Café, a charming sidewalk coffee shop with complimentary newspapers and books available to browse while tucking-into your salmon bagel with cream cheese. |
| And at night? Pulsating house beats, intoxicating beverages, suggestive visuals… Miami’s latest super-club? Not quite. More like a pub crawl for art lovers. Once a month, dozens of Wynwood’s art galleries open their doors to the public for a festive ‘night walk’. If like us you are lucky enough to find yourselves in the city during one of these happenings I highly recommend you don’t give this one a miss. Street DJs keep the party going all night, and there is almost more colour-popping eye-candy on the exterior walls of the showrooms than there is on their (more conventional) interior ones. Fresh to death graffiti. My absolute fav … Ghetto, moi? |

| We have gone through last weeks entries from our ‘Win a Trip to Miami’ competition with Look Magazine and have selected our favourites for all to see. It couldn’t be easier to enter. Camille’s printed hotpants are the things dreams are made of…not to mention those amazing pins that seem to go on for miles! Although her dream holiday destination is LA we think this outfit would go down a storm in Miami too.
