Meet New Balance’s Creative Directors

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Savania Davies-Keiller and Roberto Crivello

In the fall of 2008, New Balance named Savania Davies-Keiller and Roberto Crivello, founders and designers of the design technology brand DDCLAB, as global creative directors. In their new role, Davies Keiller and Crivello have set the direction for the sneaker brand’s lifestyle category through their vision and innovative design approach.

The move to work with New Balance is a logical one for both Davies-Keiller and Crivello, who have worked with New Balance- owned PF Flyers since 2003. In their evolved role as creative directors, the two deliver global products that seamlessly combine expert design and comfort. “Our main goal with New Balance Lifestyle is to deliver shoes that can be worn to support an active lifestyle with a focus on design material and color. For example,” says Davies-Keiller, “fall ‘09 includes fabrics such as aluminum coated rip-stop, reflective nylons, soft gloved leathers and perforated meshes.”

Davies-Keiller and Crivello have become well regarded for their early use of advanced materials and fabrications. The design team has previously incorporated sophisticated technologies into apparel and footwear including: Climate Control (body temperature regulation), Metal Inox blends (insulation and sun protection), Anti-Microbial fabrics (sanitary benefits),
Anti-Radiation pocket detailing (cell phone and i-pod radiation protection), and Copper pocket details (identity theft scanner protection). Davies-Keiller and Crivello have also been using Bamboo, Cork, PLA based fibers derived from plants, Corn, Banana Leaf, Vegetable dye and other unique natural fibers years before these materials were part of a fashionable eco movement.

Davies-Keiller and Crivello’s dedication of working directly with New Balance and previous clients (including Dupont, Levis and Gap) to develop innovative perspectives on material applications has lead to critical acclaim by the fashion and design world. The duo was presented with the Material ConneXion Medium Award, nominated by Surface Magazine, for their excellence in Fashion Innovation in 2007.

Attributing their inspirations to everything from tree trunks to skyscrapers, Davies-Keiller and Crivello lend their talent to the continued evolution and development of the New Balance brand. According to Davies-Keiller, “Our goal is to forge a marriage between true design and true ingenuity. We truly believe New Balance exemplifies the perfect combination of heritage,
craftsmanship, innovation and imagination.”
